Welcome to Blue Sky Action Rabbitry!
After browsing our site, be sure to comment below if it could use improvement or if it's coming along well, as it is still under construction!
We are a small scale rabbitry out in Leon, West Virginia, raising rabbits for pets, meat, and show. We are always improving our stock with better quality rabbits, but we still have rabbits available for companions or for the table.
Our breeder is turning 18 this April and is hoping to get her driver's license this year! We might eventually consider rabbit transport throughout the tri-state of WV/OH/KY, so stay tuned!
We primarily raise Lionhead, Californian, New Zealand, and New Zealand/Lionhead meat cross rabbits. We have a few random crosses and purebreds, but we are eventually going to do only the above breeds.
Here at Blue Sky Action Rabbitry, our kits are handled every day to 5 times a week, regardless of its future destination, because they're too darn cute to not to! When you come to us for your next rabbit, expect it to arrive in your care with a full bill of health, a round of cocci prevention, and its nails trimmed!
We really love our rabbits and their unique little personalities, from Angus’s laid back demeanor to Nova’s sensitive, territorial attitude. We refuse to butcher any of our old breeders after they retire unless they are sick, their future and quality of life is compromised by aggressive tendencies, and/or just totally unhappy, keeping to our same poultry raising views. We will either keep or re-home our retired breeders after they reach a certain age to pet homes only, where they’ll be properly cared for until they pass away. Take a peek at our “Aged Breeders” and our “For Sale” pages to see more or adopt one of our retirees!
We also participate in and support any local contests and shows when we can. We won lots of awards last year at the 2018 Mason County Fair, and for the first time, our rabbits won more than our birds did. Take a look at our In Action: Rabbitry News tab under the Our Rabbitry section of our website to see the results!
Things You Should Know Before Venturing Farther!
Don’t get me wrong; I love my rabbits; I really do. But before you go any farther, I will let you know straight up that we breed meat rabbits. I breed meat strain rather than show strain meat breeds. It can be the ugliest Californian you’d ever seen but what does it matter? We cross different breeds, occasionally to sell as pets or breeders but mostly for meat. I have no problem with cross breeders or believe rabbit overpopulation is an issue. Where we live, everyone has enough respect to eat their culls than dump them on someone else, forget and neglect them to death, or drop them by a shelter. I’ve yet to meet a single shelter rabbit. Perhaps if there is a problem, we should all eat more rabbits!
I also butcher by own rabbits and we eat their meat and I tan their hides. I cull any aggressive animals to either my pet herd or the freezer. I don’t breed sickly or mean rabbits; nature versus nurture. We also have no vets around that are knowledgeable about rabbits, so if one gets an illness or injury I or my vet tech mother can’t handle, it’s a cull. They live on wire flooring for sanitary purposes unless they have kits; I then move them to a shavings pen so their kits have no chance of being born on wire and freezing to death.
If you have any problems with anything we do here, then you have absolutely no right to tell me how to raise rabbits. Don’t like it, then you can leave. I might not like the idea of having pets (dogs included) living inside my house or in my cars but that doesn’t mean I’m going to tell you how to live, right? We have ways we do things here and I will keep living by those ways. Thank you.

Current breeds
Californians
Current head: One buck and one doe.
Our Californians are from a production bloodline, but they have nice form, too. They are very large and have excellent meat to bone ratio. We will be selling their friendliest kits, so watch our sale page for anything available! Starting at $20 (Based on an 8 week old buck kit. See sales page for current pricing for all ages) |
|
New Zealands
Current head: 1 buck and 4 does (1 black, 1 broken chestnut, 1 red, 1 chestnut)
We currently breed two different colors of New Zealands, chestnut, broken chestnut, gold tipped steel, red, broken red, and white. An American breed despite the name, New Zealand rabbits make excellent pets or meat producers. Ours have hilarious personalities and good temperaments, and we can't wait to have a few litters from them! In the future, we anticipate to get in whites and reds, so stay tuned! Starting at $15 (based on an 8 week old buck kit) |

Lionhead/New Zealand meat/pet rabbitsInspired by the idea of having larger, meatier Lionheads, our own LH/NZ crosses are compact with plenty of meat and softer fur for our future endeavor into pelts. They have vivid personalities and also make great pets.
Starting at $10 |
|
Lionheads
Our Lionheads are larger, heavier built, and not as fragile as some. They are more for companions than show winners, however, our previous REW buck, Yukon, took blue in his class at our local fair last year. Our stock are also very maternal and are excellent mothers, and our doe, Bianca, still loves her retained doe, Holly, from last year!
Starting at $15 |
|
Mini Rex
Our newest endeavor! Our Mini Rex are super soft and sweet with vibrant personalities. We have some interesting colors in our herd, including harlequin, broken blue and black otter, chocolate otter, and broken black.
Starting at $18 |
|
Various meat mutts and pet crosses
This includes NZ/Californian, Californian/Lionhead, Lionhead/English lop, or unknown breeds and rescues. We're trying to get out of just pet quality crosses, but we still tend to have a few.
Starting at $8 |
